Review: ‘Tribes’
Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin
Seth Godin paraphrases the Peter Principle: “In every Organization, everyone rises to the level at which they become paralyzed with fear.”
Tribes, like so many of Seth Godin’s books, drips with inspiration. In Tribes, Seth Godin maintains that there is the possibility of a Leader in all of us. You don’t have to be at the top of the Organization to help create and cultivate Tribes – teams that are inspired and passionately moving in the same direction. Mr Godin clarifies the difference between Managers and Leaders. Managers maintain the status quo (through a well-documented process or playbook) while Leaders challenge it. It’s a simple distinction, but his point is that following the rules does not make Leaders; it makes managers – reinforcers of the system. Instead, Leaders see a world that may not exist and believe they can make change happen. As such, leaders invite people in to share their vision and help create and evolve it. Perhaps the most powerful thing about this book is why we don’t step forward in uncertainty – fear. Leadership is about choice. It’s about recognizing the fear and still doing the work.
