Review: ‘Thanks for the Feedback’
Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen
This book is for everyone who struggles with receiving (or giving) feedback. It reviews the science behind receiving feedback. In essence, elements are hard-wired into us, making feedback incredibly difficult. Sometimes, a physical response happens when people shut down while receiving negative feedback. This book discusses different types of reactions and ways to overcome these blockers.
Thanks for the Feedback helped us understand a) why feedback is challenging for many people to receive and b) how to deliver feedback that doesn’t cause a shut down tactfully. For example, if the feedback you provide challenges the receiver’s identity construct, they will likely reject it. Or if the person doesn’t believe that the giver is qualified to provide feedback, they are likely to reject it. As a leader, how you approach giving feedback is critical, and this book provides a solid baseline understanding of what might be happening to the receiver of that feedback.
