Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath

Switch is a foundational book for Change Management and Behavior Change. Many books attempt to go through similar content regarding creating lasting change. Switch, however, is where you start. Chip and Dan Heath outline the battle of the emotional self vs. the rational self. Change has to not only sound good, but it must also feel good. An evaluation of Bright Spots helps highlight past successes. Backed with studies and examples, Switch highlights the battle through three key components to make a change (Motivate the Elephant – the emotional self; Direct the Rider – the rational self; and Shape the Path – the situation or environment). These components need clarity of the goal, small measures of progress (to reinforce), and evaluation or change of the situation or environment.

Knowing how your team will respond to change is fundamental as a leader. It’s a constant. Switch is the book to read if you want to help your team navigate through uncertainty.
