Review: ‘Flawless Consulting’
Flawless Consulting: A Guide to Getting Your Expertise Used by Peter Block
This book sat on my bookshelf for a decade because, as a “seasoned” consultant and consulting leader, I didn’t want to be told how to consult. But this book by Peter Block was an excellent synthesis of many of the learnings and challenges we have experienced, and I regret not picking it up earlier. The book takes a very linear approach towards a consulting engagement – it starts at contracting and moves through the stages to contract close-out. Some terms have changed over time, but the ideas are all there. Mr. Block details the importance of feedback, connection, and friction throughout the entire lifecycle of an implementation. He highlights common forms of resistance and the importance of the Consultant taking a direct but caring approach to delivering value. Overall, this was a pleasant surprise and a worthwhile read – especially if you feel stuck in consulting.
