Three Lessons About AI That I Learned from Being a Sub-Par Soccer Player

Three Lessons About AI That I Learned from Being a Sub-Par Soccer Player

March 10, 2026 Thom Dempsey

LinkedIn has become… fascinating.

Every day I get served a political post that:

  1. I never expected LinkedIn to allow, and
  2. completely contradicts every other social media bubble I live in.

So apparently LinkedIn is now my accidental echo-chamber breaker.

But the bigger change is the rise of a new genre of post:

“I did something that has absolutely nothing to do with business…
but here are the leadership lessons.”

Examples:

• I ran a marathon → startup grit
• My toddler refused broccoli → negotiation tactics
• I baked sourdough → venture capital strategy

The metaphorical stretching happening here could qualify for the Olympics.

Analogies are great. Taking things out of context can be fun. But only if the author isn’t taking themselves extremely seriously while doing it.

LinkedIn used to be a place where people shared their work.

Now it’s a place where “business influencers” share their personal brand… disguised as a life lesson from assembling IKEA furniture.
