Redefining Greatness: Embracing Generosity in the Professional World
I used to believe that to excel at my job, I had to view my colleagues as inferior. It was like a constant competition among us. Interestingly, I also observe this mindset in others, including a new team member. He exudes an air of greatness. However, I’ve come to realize that this perspective is nothing more than a deceptive trick. It’s called Deficit Thinking, where one can only see what others lack.
But here’s the thing: his greatness has absolutely nothing to do with me or anyone else. And my own greatness has nothing to do with him or anyone else either. The truth is, we can both be great.
If you can make space for others to shine in your professional world, then that is genuine greatness. What truly sets apart the exceptional individuals from the rest is generosity. Similarly, if you can find ways to support and guide others in their journey to greatness, then you are truly remarkable.
It may be tempting to belittle others, as it gives an immediate sense of satisfaction and a false belief of superiority. However, let me assure you, that illusion fades away quickly. In contrast, a great and generous leader leaves a lasting impact that far surpasses any temporary ego boost.
If you require someone to help raise your efforts and push you to strive for greater heights, consider what Simon Sinek calls a Worthy Rival. A Worthy Rival has something or does something as well or better than you. According to Sinek, “They may make a superior product, command greater loyalty, are better leaders, or act with a clearer sense of purpose than we do.” A Worthy Rival is not intended to be someone you have to minimize to feel better; they are someone who makes you do better – to strive for better.
